Frequently Asked Questions
Many Whitedrop foam and polyester cleanroom swabs can be supplied with ESD-safe handles for use in electrostatic discharge (ESD) protected areas. These swabs are designed for cleaning static-sensitive components such as PCBs, semiconductors, electronics, and precision instruments. ESD-safe handles are available on selected models upon request and feature a surface resistivity of 10⁸–10⁹ Ω/sq. If your application requires ESD protection, please contact our team before ordering to ensure you receive the correct ESD-safe version for your needs.
Yes. Isopropyl alcohol (IPA), particularly high-purity 99% IPA, is widely used to clean printed circuit boards (PCBs) and electronic components. It effectively removes flux residues, oils, grease, fingerprints, and other contaminants while evaporating quickly and leaving minimal residue. For the best results, use IPA with a lint-free, cleanroom swab or wipe to avoid introducing fibres or particles. Always ensure the equipment is powered off and completely dry before reconnecting or powering it on.
Foam swabs generally produce the least lint because they are made from open-cell polyurethane foam with no loose fibres to shed during use. They are ideal for cleaning delicate surfaces, optical components, electronics, and other contamination-sensitive applications. Polyester swabs also offer excellent low-lint performance and are well suited for cleanroom environments where durability and abrasion resistance are required. Choosing the right swab depends on your application, but foam swabs are typically the best choice when minimising lint is the highest priority.
